Dip a Day Feature: The Benefits of Cold Water Swimming

Since Covid-19 there has been a huge emphasis on physical and mental well-being. People have become more aware of how important it is and are starting to incorporate little actions into their daily lives to improve these areas. Cold water swimming is an activity that can really benefit your body and mind. Whether you have only been for a cold water dip once or if it’s part of your daily routine, these benefits will be of interest to you!

Boosting Wellbeing

Above all else, cold water swimming improves your health and wellbeing by relaxing the body and mind. It activates endorphins – the essential brain chemicals that gives us that feel good factor! It can help to reduce stress levels, improve sleeping patterns, and can be considered as a form of meditation.

Strengthening your Immune System

We all need to keep our immune systems strong, especially these days time, and it just so happens that plunging into cold water has been proven to be an effective way to do so! Studies show that regular cold water swimmers can develop stronger immune defences as a result of the white blood cell count which is boosted as the body is forced to react to changing conditions.

Swimming in open water – especially sea swimming – can have improve your skin. Salt water contains lots of skin friendly vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. It’s also a mild antiseptic and can act as a great healer.

Cold water swimming makes the heart pump faster and the body burn more calories as it has to work harder to keep you warm.
