Galway Simon Community have announced a new location for their annual Sleep Out taking place on Friday 4th October. This year, The Village Salthill have come on board and are inviting the Salthill community to get together to help raise funds and awareness to tackle homelessness here in Galway.
As registrations open up for the event, Keith Kissane from The Village Salthill Collective commented on their involvement. ‘’We are delighted to be hosting a Salthill Village Sleep Out this year and we hope that it will encourage even more people to rise to the challenge of taking part and raising much needed funds for Galway Simon”, Keith said.
The 2019 Sleep Out for Simon will also see friends, families, and colleagues from Tuam, Loughrea, and the City Centre coming together to swap their beds for sleeping bags for one night in an act of solidarity with those facing homelessness in our community.
229 individuals and families throughout Galway City & County directly benefited from funds raised last year which were specifically used to support Galway Simon Community’s Homelessness Prevention Services. 100% of proceeds from this year’s event will go directly towards plans to further extend the reach of these essential services.
Speaking about the urgent need for funds to expand their services, Karen Feeney, Head of Client Services with Galway Simon said “With the private rental sector here in Galway continuing to spiral out of control and an ever widening gap between housing support limits and market rent prices there is an urgent need to continue to ensure that preventative measures are in place”.
Galway Simon’s Homelessness Prevention Services include a Community Support Team, a dedicated Youth Service, a specialist Women and Family Service as well as a drop in resource centre in East County Galway.
